Cons Hold’em Invitation Poker Series  2011

Ranking Points System

The 2009_2 Series will be run on a new points system. The basic idea is to reward those who finish higher in a given tournament with more points than those who finish lower. Further to that, players are this year awarded certain bonuses if they meet certain other criteria. Each and every tournament will be using the same points system, so each will be relative to any other tournament.

There is also an example spreadsheet you can download to see and test the new formulas in place for this season. Have a play with it and see how the scores come out.

Basic Strategy

The more players there are in a tournament then the more points will be available. Obviously it’s harder to win a tourney with 20 player in it than one with 10 players. Similarly, a tourney with 10 players that plays itself out with no rebuys is easier to win than one with 10 players that has 8 rebuys. For this reason the more rebuys in a tourney then the more points available.

Because Rebuys are available in three formats (£15 for 5,000 chips, £12 for 4,000 chips and £9 for 3,000 chips) then the total cost of one player in a tourney against another is also very relevant. The ideal scenario is to win a comp with no rebuys and incur as many ‘hits’ as possible.

Hits

A ‘hit’ occurs when you win a hand that causes another player to lose ‘all’ of their chips. So if two players are taken out of a tourney at the same point then the one who had spent the least on rebuys or had the most hits would gain extra points over those who had made no hits and had many rebuys.

The formula

The formula we will use in our tournaments is as follows :

((  (n+tnr+bc)*prizepool)  /  (r+nr))  + (nh*bc)

Where bc = BuyinCost : tnr = TotalNumerofRebuys : nh = NumerofHits : tc = TotalCost : n = numberofplayers :pp = prizepool :nr = numberofrebuys

This will multiply the BuyinCost by the TotalNumberofRebuys(+1) by the PrizePool by the total number of hits. This is then divided by the rank you finished in and divided by the number of Rebuys you had. This is added to the number of Rebuys times the total cost of your outlay on the night. This is divided by 100 to keep the numbers on a smaller scale and then the lots is divided by the number of Players squared.

...And those who would prefer to stay awake...

After a few test runs, it roughly works out that first place will always get n times nth place, where n is the number of players in the tourney. So with 7 players 1st should get approx 7 times whatever 7th gets. Similarly, with 12 players 1st place should get approx 12 times whatever 12th gets and so on.

Rebuys

Players are also penalised for getting a rebuy. In essence a Rebuy is another life so makes it easier to get further in a tournament. This rule should hopefully help anyone tempted to over indulge in rebuys. Players will roughly lose the equivalent of one place for every rebuy the take. For this reason it will be common to see players who finish in 4th place getting more points than those who finished 5th who may have used less, or no rebuys.

Remember only the best 75% of all the tournament played (We expect to play around 26 tournaments from Jan till mid June) is the maximum number of tourney points you can contribute. 75% equate to 17 tourneys, so until we have played that many, the tables show will just be sorted by total points scored. However, once you’ve played (say) 20 comps, only your best 15 (75% of comps actually played) will be used towards your tally.  When 24 comps have been played then players may use a maximum of 16 tournament points towards their grand total.
